The easiest way to ensure proper fit is to be measured by a professional – either a tailor or your local dry cleaner.
If these are not options for you, it’s not the end of the world! Grab a friend and a measuring tape and follow the guidelines below:
- Always measure directly over undergarments.
- Do not pull the measuring tape too tight – allow a finger’s width between your body and tape measure. For bust and waist measurements, try inhaling deeply to make sure you have enough “give” in your measurement.
- BUST – this measurement should be taken at the fullest part of your bust line. Make sure the tape measure runs straight across your back (this is where a friend will come in handy).
- EMPIRE LINE – this measurement should be taken at the rib cage, right under your bra line with arms down. Again, make sure the tape measure runs straight across your back.
- WAIST – this should be taken at your natural waistline, which is the narrowest point of your midsection and typically at the same level of your navel (probably a lot higher than where you would normally wear pants or a skirt).
- HIP – this measurement should be taken at the fullest part of your hip. Make sure the tape measure runs straight across your backside and doesn’t dip!
